An ex-employee of the U.S. Postal Service, who stands accused of pilfering checks worth $1.7 million from the mail, was apprehended last week while attempting to escape the country. Hachikosela Muchimba, aged 43, was arrested on the previous Wednesday at Washington D.C.'s Dulles International Airport as he was preparing to board a flight bound for Zambia.
According to Department of Justice prosecutors, Muchimba's alleged modus operandi involved filching checks from the mail, altering the recipient's name, and subsequently depositing them into his personal bank account. He now faces the prospect of a maximum sentence of 35 years in prison on charges of mail fraud and bank fraud.
