Burglary Suspects Use Getaway Car ‘Out of a 007 Movie’

Irvine police tracked down a Mercedez-Benz equipped with a push-button rotating license plate among other surprises after receiving a tip about a car possibly linked to a burglary investigation.

The resident who provided the tip recognized the vehicle after several carjackings took place in their Orange County community. The driver was pulled over by officers in the area near Harvard Avenue and Main Street when the caller’s description matched the distinctive white sedan.

The officers, after discovering the car’s mechanical flipping license plate, noticed some other unique characteristics as well.

“The suspect vehicle was something out of a 007 movie,” said the police in a post shared on Instagram. “Officers discovered a device that would flip the vehicle’s license plate with the push of a button and an elaborate gas siphoning device that transferred fuel directly into the vehicle’s gas tank.” The Instagram post included videos and photos of the devices. Much like the taxi in the 2004 remake starring Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifa, the license plate flipper allows the user to flip the plates 180 degrees vertically between two different plates.

Two residents of Garden Grove were arrested and booked on suspicion of vehicle burglary, vehicle theft, identity theft, possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools. Police say the tools were found inside the car.

While conducting their investigation, detectives also found a stolen vehicle in Irvine. Somehow, the thieves were able to enter locked parking garages, breaking into cars and stealing one Chevy Camaro.

“We appreciate the great tip from the resident who called this in,” said the police graciously.
