Nine-Year-Old Supergirl is Awarded for Protecting Mom from Suspected Robber

A 9-year-old girl from Florida received an award from the Police after she fought off a robber, protecting her mother.

Journee Nelson and her mother were shopping for groceries at Sabor Tropical Supermarket on November 2nd when the suspect attempted to steal her mom’s purse. The entire altercation was captured on surveillance video.

While Journee’s mother was loading their groceries into the car, the suspect ‘rushed up on her’ and began violently pulling at her purse before knocking her down to the ground. The suspect demanded her mother let go, saying “you’re going to make me pop you” while reaching for his waistband. Journee had other plans.

The security video shows Journee throwing punches at the suspect, hitting him in the face in attempt to save her mother and protect their belongings. “I fought back,” she said. “I had to save my mom.” Nonetheless, the suspect ended up pushing Journee to the ground as well, making their escape with the purse they sought to steal.

The perpetrator, Demetrius Jackson, was later identified and arrested said police.

The police department honored Journee with a medal and certificate for her swift actions and courageous efforts.

“Chief Adderly honored a 9-year-old child today for bravery as she ran to her mother’s defense to fend off a brazen robber. An arrest was swiftly made in this case. The West Palm Beach Police Foundation presented [Journee] with a token of appreciation.”

While the Chief of Police commended Journee’s bravery, he did discourage others from taking the same actions when in the face of danger. “I wouldn’t recommend that you confront an individual like that but in the heat of the moment things happen. I bet he was shocked when she kicked him right in the face…he was not expecting that, and her actions were perfect timing in this particular situation.”

Demetrius Jackson was charged with robbery and battery.
