Samuel Adams to Bring Back Beer That's Illegal in 15 States

Every two years, Samuel Adams brews a new, limited-edition version of their Utopias, barrel-aged beer, which isn’t shipped to or sold in 15 states, including: Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North and South Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah and Vermont due to its 28% alcohol by volume.

Starting on October 11th, 2021, the twelfth edition of their Utopias beer will hit shelves where sold. Be prepared, though, for the demand, as it won’t be easy to get your hands on it. Samuel Adams only brews 13,000 bottles, and it’s not cheap! Suggested retail price per 25.4-ounce bottle is $240.

Jim Koch, founder and brewer of Samuel Adams, said “[They] pioneered the barrel-aging and blending process of Utopias almost thirty years ago and continue that time-honored tradition today.”

After being first introduced in 2002, the price has gradually increased over the years. In 2017, a bottle was $199, and in 2019 it was $10 more expensive. This year’s batch has been finished with 2,000 pounds of cherries and some batches have been aged for up to 24 years in a variety of barrels
