Texas Power Companies Hit With Wrongful Death Lawsuit

The family of an 11-year-old boy who died in his mobile home during the Texas deep freeze last week has filed a $100 million lawsuit against Texas power providers.

The lawsuit accuses them of gross negligence...

"It was his "first time (seeing snow). That’s why he was excited outside," his mother, Maria Elisa Pineda said on Thursday. "Everything was well. He was happy that day. He was not at all sick."

Pineda filed the wrongful death lawsuit alleging the utility companies "put profits over the welfare of people" by ignoring previous recommendations to winterize its power grid.

"Despite having knowledge of the dire weather forecast for at least a week in advance, and the knowledge that the system was not prepared for more than a decade, ERCOT and Entergy failed to take any preemptory action that could have averted the crisis and were wholly unprepared to deal with the crisis at hand," the lawsuit stated, according to ABC News.

Entergy Corporation released a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of life in our community. We are unable to comment due to pending litigation."

More than 4 million customers were left without heat and electricity last week as temperatures in parts of Texas plunged to single digits.
