Oregon Wants to Lower the Voting Age to 16

The state of Oregon is considering a bill that would lower the state's minimum voting age from 18 to 16.

One of the bill's sponsors, State Senator Shemia Fagan, says she was inspired by the political activism of the Parkland students, and said it's time to "give young people a chance to participate at the ballot"

If the bill passes, Oregon residents would vote on the measure as part of the 2020 election.

The last time the national voting age was lowered happened more than 40 years ago in 1971, when it went from 21 to 18.
