LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles will reopen its adoption center in the West Adams area Wednesday for the first time since it closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The center is located at 5026 W. Jefferson Blvd., one block east of La Brea Avenue. It will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday, and closed Mondays, Tuesdays and holidays, with a ceremonial grand opening scheduled for Aug. 24.

Only dogs and cats are available now, but smaller pets such as rabbits or guinea pigs might be available in the future, officials said.

Originally opened in the 1940s, the facility has served as a spay/neuter center and overflow shelter over the years, the spcaLA's Ana Bustilloz told City News Service.

In July 2019, it reopened as the spcaLA Pet Adoption Center, but closed again during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We are thrilled to reopen as an adoption center for the community," Bustilloz said. "There are volunteer opportunities available and we offer training classes. Info can be found at spcaLA.com."

The spcaLA also operates the SouthBay Pet Adoption Center at 12910 Yukon Ave. in Hawthorne, and the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village & Education Center at 7700 E. Spring St. in Long Beach.

The spcaLA is an independent, nonprofit animal welfare organization that has been serving Southern California since 1877.
