NEWPORT BEACH (CNS) - A man riding a bicycle was killed in Newport Beach by a driver who was allegedly under the influence of an unknown drug and fled the scene but was arrested later, authorities said today.

The crash occurred about 8:30 a.m. Sunday on Jamboree Road at Bay View Way, according to  Newport Beach Police Department Lt. Michael Schiavi. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, Schiavi said. The bicyclist's name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

The suspected woman and vehicle were located near Corona del Mar High School, in the 2100 block of Eastbluff Drive, Schiavi said. She was detained and ultimately arrested, and was later identified as 36-year-old Adriana Bernal of Anaheim.

``Through the course of the investigation, Bernal was found to be under the influence of a drug at the time of the collision,'' according to the Newport Beach Police Department. Bernal was booked for murder and hit-and-run. No further details were released.
