LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The amount of cargo being processed at the Port of Los Angeles in 2022 is outpacing last year's record, port officials announced today.
The port moved a record 3.5 million units in the first four months of 2022, 1% more than last year's record pace.
``We've had a remarkably strong start to the year and cargo continues to flow into Los Angeles despite some of the COVID lockdowns in China,'' Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka said. ``While there are impacts being seen from sub-assembly to manufacturing through delivery, transpacific trade has held steady.''
``Looking forward, while we don't expect any abrupt changes, the situation in China may lead to a lull in volume with a fairly quick bounce back once the lockdowns end,'' Seroka added. Despite the overall increase, the port moved less cargo last month than in April 2021, making last month the second busiest April in the port's 115-year history.
A total of 887,357 20-foot equivalent units were processed last month, down from 946,966 units moved in April 2021. Imports moved during April 2022 reached 456,670 units, a 6.8% decrease from the same month the previous year. Exports last month also decreased by 12.7% to 99,878 units, marking the 38th month of decline out of the last 42 months. The port also moved 330,810 empty containers, a 3.4% decrease to the same month the previous year.
