Doctor's appointments can be tough to keep when you're busy orbiting the Earth aboard the International Space Station. Fortunately, NASA has come up with the next best thing - a holographic house call.
- This week, NASA beamed flight surgeon Josef Schmid to the ISS via technology they call 'holoportation' - putting Schmid aboard the station in the form of a 3-D hologram that can consult with astronauts in real time.
- Astronauts wear a special 'augmented reality' headset to see and interact with Schmid and his medical team.
- Schmid said holoportation is a "completely new manner of human communication across vast distances".
- Does this mean holograms will soon replace FaceTime?
