LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Police descended on an apartment in a downtown Los Angeles high-rise today in an effort to serve a search warrant, prompting a five-hour standoff with officers believing a suspect was barricaded inside, but the unit turned out to be empty.

Officers went to the building near 12th and Figueroa streets about 4 a.m. to serve a search warrant, setting off the standoff, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Police set up a perimeter and kept people away from the area.

Police eventually entered the unit shortly before 9 a.m., but the man was not inside, the LAPD reported.
