Man Makes First Court Appearance In 89-Year-Old Grandmother's Killing

POMONA (CNS) - A man made his first court appearance today on a charge alleging that he murdered his 89-year-old grandmother in El Monte.

Charles Lawrence Parsons, who turned 32 on Sunday, was ordered to remain jailed in lieu of $2 million bail while awaiting arraignment Jan. 24 in a Pomona courtroom.

Parsons was arrested just before 6 a.m. last Wednesday by El Monte police in connection with the woman's death.

Her identity has not been released pending notification of her next of kin.

Police responded at 10:54 pm. Tuesday to the 11300 block Cedar Circle on a welfare check, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

``When they arrived, they found a woman lying inside the location suffering from significant trauma to the upper body,'' according to a statement from the sheriff's department.

The woman was taken to a hospital, where she died, the sheriff's department reported.

``Officers received information regarding a possible suspect,'' according to the statement from the sheriff's department statement. ``He was located, detained as a person of interest, and has since been arrested for the murder.''
