Thanksgiving Tips to Keep Your Pets Safe this Holiday Season

Thanksgiving is just days away and while the food and togetherness is certainly a highlight for many, it can cause some hazards for the furrier members of the family.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has released some tips to keep pets happy and healthy this holiday season.

If you want to share some of your Thanksgiving feast with your pet, you can but there are some things to look out for.

While you can give them turkey and most veggies like carrots, green beans and potatoes you have to make sure they aren't in any sauces.

Spices can be harmful so avoid anything with garlic or onion powder and too much fat could be hard for them to digest so it's best to keep the meat lean.

If they somehow managed to sneak a bite of something they shouldn't have, some symptoms to keep an eye out for are sudden changes in behavior, pain, vomiting, or diarrhea.

If anything like that occurs, AVMA says you should call your vet immediately.

Beyond eating, if you decide to travel with your pets some tips to keep them comfortable are to pack for them like you would for yourself; remember any important records and medications they may need.

If you're traveling via car, make sure your pets are secured in a harness or carrier and if you're boarding them make sure they are up-to-date on all vaccines.
