COMMERCE (CNS) - A shooting today involving a sheriff's deputy who was allegedly attacked at a Commerce gas station left a woman dead, a man critically wounded and the deputy with a facial injury.

The shooting occurred about 4 a.m. in the 5700 block of Whittier Boulevard, near Atlantic Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies went to the location after receiving a call ``regarding a person attempting to light on fire a gasoline pump,'' a sheriff's statement said.

``When deputies arrived, they contacted a male adult standing at the rear of an SUV parked in front of a gasoline convenience store,'' the statement said. ``The deputy told the suspect to walk back towards him, at which initially, the suspect did comply. However, once the male suspect was near the deputy, he turned around and immediately attacked the deputy. During the physical altercation, both fell to the ground.

``While the male suspect was on top of the deputy, a female adult exited the ... SUV that was parked and ran towards the suspect and the deputy with an unknown metal object in hand and stabbed the deputy once in the face area,'' the statement said. ``The deputy then retrieved his firearm and fired several rounds at the suspects, striking both.''

The woman died at the scene and the wounded man was taken to a hospital in critical condition, the sheriff's department reported. The woman's name was withheld pending notification of her relatives. The male suspect's name was not immediately released.

The deputy was treated at a hospital and released. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
