Wisconsin Diver Finds Sunken 1,200-Year-Old Canoe

A Wisconsin archaeologist who was scuba diving for fun has found a canoe that's estimated to be more than 1,200 years old.

  • Tamara Thomsen made the discovery in June under 27 feet of water in Madison's Lake Mendota. On Wednesday, a team successfully extracted the relic from the bottom of the lake. "I’m underwater an awful lot,” Thomsen says. "I’ve never seen this underwater before and I don’t think I’ll ever get to again in my career."
  • According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, the canoe was built by Native Americans around 800 A.D. Archaeologists say they hope it will provide them with insight into early Native American culture in the Madison area.
