A foul odor has been lingering through the city of Carson in the last few days leaving residents confused and angry that nothing is being done to eradicate the smell.

The smell is believed to be coming from Carson's Dominguez Channel, a 15.7-mile river that flows through the city. Officials say the smell potentially comes from an organic material drying out in the channel.

According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and Public Works, early findings show that organic material was left on the banks of the channel during low tide, ruling out that this smell could come from a release of oil or waste from nearby facilities.

Carson Mayor, Lula Davis-Holmes said in a statement that the smell is believed to be hydrogen sulfide. Davis-Holmes is calling for an investigation into the smell, she said:

"I'm hoping that expected rain in the forecast tonight will wash away the organic material and reduce or improve the odor situation. My question to all involved agencies is what is the problem, what is being done to correct it, who is at fault and what is being done to prevent it from happening again? We are continuing our efforts to communicate with all involved entities for a resolution."

Health officials say that only long-term exposure can cause problems, but they are also urging residents to keep doors and windows closed as much as they can until the odor diminishes.

Many residents have complained about experiencing nausea and other symptoms due to the smell. A resident named, Twila, told ABC7 Eyewitness News:

"I lost my appetite. It's giving me bad headaches," .. "It's bad."
