Someone just got an awesome deal on a couple of really big boats.
- The U.S. Navy has sold the USS Kitty Hawk and the USS John F. Kennedy -- both aircraft carriers that have been decommissioned for years -- for the low price of one cent each, military officials have revealed.
That's not to say the huge ships will venture back out to sea. The purchaser is a scrap metal company that plans to disassemble the carriers to sell off their parts, says Alan Baribeau, a rep for Naval Sea Systems Command. "The contract values reflect that the contracted company will benefit from the subsequent sale of scrap steel, iron, and non-ferrous metal ores," he notes.
- If the scrap metal company is going to make a mint off the carriers, why did the Navy sell them for such a low price?
