SANTA ANA (CNS) - A 24-year-old man was charged today with a fatal crash that killed a Buena Park attorney and critically injured his wife while out on a date night.

Nathaniel Machado of Anaheim was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter, hit and run with permanent and serious injury and reckless driving causing injury to a person other than the driver, all felonies.

Machado also faces sentencing enhancements for fleeing the scene of a vehicular manslaughter and inflicting great bodily injury on the victim.

Keith Alan, 58, was killed in Saturday's crash, and his wife, Tami, was rushed to an hospital in critical condition, said Buena Park Police Department Sgt. Chad Weaver.

Machado was driving west on Auto Center Drive through Western Avenue on a red light before slamming into Alan's southbound car slightly before 6:40 p.m., Weaver said.

Machado and his passengers got out of the car and ran away, Weaver said.

Machado arranged to turn himself in with his attorney Friday afternoon.

Machado pleaded not guilty and was ordered to return to court Sept. 24 in the North Justice Center in Fullerton for a pretrial hearing.
