SANTA ANA (CNS) - A 42-year-old transient was charged today with fatally stabbing another transient in Santa Ana.

Sergio Gayton was charged with murder with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon.

He is accused of killing 36-year-old Joany Hernandez of Santa Ana on Monday night, according to Cpl. Sonia Rono of the Santa Ana Police Department.

Police were called at 7:49 p.m. Monday to a report of a stabbing in the 500 block of West Dyer Road, Rono said. They found the victim, who had been stabbed multiple times in the upper body.

Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were tipped about a potential suspect in the 2600 block of South Olive Street and when they went to talk to Gayton he led them on a short foot chase, Rono said.

Police found the suspect had Hernandez's belongings and blood on his clothes, Rono said. Police recovered a knife they believe was the murder weapon, she added.
