BEVERLY HILLS (CNS) - Veteran actress Markie Post, best known for her starring role on the 1980s sitcom ``Night Court,'' has died following a nearly four-year battle with cancer. She was 70.
Post's manager, Ellen Lubin Sanitsky, confirmed her death to multiple media outlets late Saturday. Her death comes less than a month after co-star Charlie Robinson died on July 11.
On the Emmy-winning ``Night Court,'' a quirky workplace comedy that aired from 1984 to 1992, Post played public defender Christine Sullivan. She also had starring roles on the TV shows ``Hearts Afire'' and ``Fall Guy.'' Post also guest starred on numerous programs, including a ``Night Court'' reunion episode of ``30 Rock.''
Post also had featured roles in movies including 1998's ``Something About Mary and 2017s ``Four Christmases and a Wedding.''
Fans and admirers of Post filled social media overnight with tributes and remembrances.
``I cannot believe the news that she has passed away,'' @ilovenightcourt tweeted. ``What a sweetheart. Beautiful inside & out. She was amazing on #NightCourt and will always hold a special place in my heart.''
``She was responsible, with the rest of `Night Court,' for some of the funniest laughs of my childhood,'' another fan tweeted. ``I'm so sorry to hear of her passing.''
One fan recalled meeting the actress in the 1990s. ``Jeez, this really sucks,'' Neil D'Monte tweeted. ``I met Markie when I first came to L.A. during an audience taping of `HEARTS AFIRE'. She was very friendly. I was a huge `NIGHT COURT' fan too. #ripmarkiepost.''
Post was born Nov. 4, 1950 in Palo Alto, Calif. and began her career working behind the scenes on game shows, including ``Split Second,'' ``Double Dare'' and ``Card Sharks''.
``For us, our pride is in who she was in addition to acting; a person who made elaborate cakes for friends, sewed curtains for first apartments and showed us how to be kind, loving and forgiving in an often harsh world,'' her family said in a statement.
Post's survivors include her husband, writer-producer Michael A. Ross; and daughters, Kate Armstrong Ross, also an actress, and Daisy Schoenborn.
