LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles native Allyson Felix today became the most decorated woman in Olympic track-and-field history by winning the bronze medal in the 400 meters -- her 10th career medal.
Felix had shared the record with Merlene Ottey, who won three silver medals and six bronze medals for Jamaica from 1980 through 2000. Felix has won six gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal.
The Finnish middle- and long-distance runner Paavo Nurmi holds the overall record with 12 from 1920 to 1928, including four in discontinued cross-country events.
Felix's time of 49.46 seconds was her best since Aug. 27, 2015, when she ran a personal-best 49.26 to win at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing.
Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas took a commanding lead coming out of the bend at Olympic Stadium in Tokyo and won her second consecutive gold medal in the event in 48.36 seconds, the sixth-fastest all-time and a national record.
Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic finished second in 49.20, the 18th-fastest all-time and a national record.
The 35-year-old Felix has said this will be her final Olympics. She will have another chance to add to her medal total Saturday when she runs in the women's 4x400 meter relay, which is set to start at 5:30 a.m.
