A 29-year-old probationer was in custody for allegedly striking the mother of his child on the bridge of her nose today with the handle portion of a semiautomatic handgun at his apartment in La Verne.

The woman called 911 at about 3:50 a.m. to report that she and her ex- boyfriend were involved in an argument outside his apartment in the 2200 block of Blossom Lane, the La Verne Police Department reported. She said Ricky Vaughns Jr. struck her across the bridge of her nose with the handle portion of the semiautomatic handgun, according to police, who added that Vaughns is on probation for domestic violence.

Officers dispatched to the scene tried contacted Vaughns outside his apartment, but upon seeing officers he retreated inside, they said. A SWAT team was called in and crisis negotiators were able to talk him out of the apartment. Vaughns was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm while prohibited.

Detectives recovered a handgun at the scene with multiple magazines, authorities said. The woman was treated at the scene by La Verne Fire Department paramedics.
