LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A small earthquake centered just east of Los Angeles International Airport's northern runways rattled much of the westside and the South Bay today, but there were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck at 5:08 p.m. It was originally reported with a magnitude 3.4, but the USGS later downgraded it to a 3.2. The USGS website pinpointed the epicenter in the El Segundo/Westchester area, just off the eastern end of the LAX runway near Lincoln and Sepulveda boulevards.
LAX officials announced on Twitter that crews “have completed inspections of LAX runways and facilities following a nearby earthquake, with no damage or operational impacts found.''
On the USGS website, residents reported feeling the quake in an area covering the bulk of the westside, as far south as Rancho Palos Verdes, north to the area of North Hollywood and stretching from Santa Monica to East Los Angeles.
Seismologist Lucy Jones tweeted that the quake “is pretty run of the mill. Near but not on the strike-slip Newport-Inglewood fault. Like the Lennox M4.0 on April 5, this one is thrust motion.''
