LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Viewing parties will be held in Hermosa Beach and Irvine today for the broadcasts of the U.S.-Mexico CONCACAF Nations League final.
The game will be broadcast in English by cable's CBS Sports Network and the Paramount+ streaming service and in Spanish by Univision and the TUDN cable network beginning at 6 p.m. with the kickoff set for 6:36 p.m. at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver.
The U.S. reached the final by defeating Honduras, 1-0, in a semifinal Thursday in Denver with substitute Jordan Siebatcheu scoring on a diving headerin the 89th minute. Mexico defeated Costa Rica on penalty kicks, 5-4, after regulation play ended scoreless in its semifinal Thursday.
This will be the first meeting between the U.S. and Mexico since Sept.6, 2019 when Mexico won an exhibition 3-0. Mexico leads the series, 36-19-15, including a 21-0-3 record from 1937-1980 and 4-1-1 record since 2015.
The U.S. is 20th in the rankings issued May 27 by FIFA, soccer's international governing body. Mexico is ranked 11th.
The U.S. team consists of four players each who play in England, Germany and Major League Soccer, including Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Sebastian Lletget, three in Belgium, two in Spain and one each in Austria, France, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and Turkey.
Mexico's roster consists of 13 players who play in Mexico, four in Spain and one each in Belgium, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands and Major League Soccer. Defender Hector Moreno is unattached.
U.S. defender Mark McKenzie and Mexico defender Gerardo Arteaga are teammates with the Belgian club Genk.
Sunday's game will be the inaugural final of the CONCACAF Nations League. The competition was created by the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football, soccer's body for the regions, in an attempt to have a regular schedule of games for national teams, some of which play fewer than 10 games in a four-year period and needed more competitive games to assist the sport's development in those nations.
The U.S. finished first in Group A of League A with a 3-1-0 record to advance to the semifinals. Mexico was first in Group B with a 4-0-0 record.
The viewing parties will be held at the Underground Pub and Grill in Hermosa Beach and Left Coast Brewing in Irvine. They are organized by the South Bay and Orange County chapters of American Outlaws, a nationwide support group for the U.S. men's and women's national soccer teams.
