Man, 18, Shot to Death in Maywood; Possible Suspect in Custody

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - An 18-year-old man was shot to death in the unincorporated Maywood area of Los Angeles County, and sheriff's deputies took a “person of interest'' into custody this morning.

The shooting was reported at 11:08 p.m. Monday in the 6100 block of Wilcox Avenue, said Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

Deputies arriving in the residential area near the Los Angeles River found the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Koerner said.

Just after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, the sheriff's Special Enforcement Bureau tweeted: “SEB SWAT canine operation with canine 'Nero' for a homicide suspect in the city of Maywood has concluded. Suspect in custody. Wilcox Ave reopened. Neighborhood safe.''

A statement issued by the SIB about 6:30 a.m. identified the person arrested as a “person of interest,'' and said that person was found and detained near a bus bench in the area of Florence and Wilcox, a short distance south of where the shooting occurred.

Anyone with information was asked to call homicide detectives at 323-890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
