Man Shot and Killed by Monterey Park Police

MONTEREY PARK (CNS) - A man was shot and killed by a Monterey Park police officer outside of the Monterey Park Police Department station and fire department headquarters, authorities said today.

The shooting occurred about 5 p.m. Monday in the 300 block of Newmark Avenue, near Barnes Park,  according to Deputy Maria Lucero of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

The police officer was at the end of his shift and entered a secured parking lot at the Monterey Park Fire Department headquarters and was followed by the suspect's vehicle, Lucero said.

“The suspect exited his vehicle, armed with a knife and charged the officer, then an officer involved shooting occurred,'' Lucero said.  ”The suspect was struck multiple times in the upper torso.''

Paramedics already on the scene worked on the wounded suspect and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, she said.

The officer was not injured, Lucero said.

Homicide detectives were processing evidence and working to retrieve surveillance video footage, she said.

Anyone with information was asked to call homicide detectives at 323-890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
