10-Year-Old Refugee Is America's Newest Chess Master

Meet America's newest chess master - a 10-year-old Nigerian refugee.

  • Tanitoluwa Adewumi of New York became an official chess master after winning his latest tournament. At just 10 years old, he's one of the youngest chess masters in history.
  • Adewumi's family came to the U.S. after fleeing the militant group Boko Haram in Nigeria. Adewumi says he practices more than 10 hours a day after school.
  • Next up for Adewumi? His new goal is to become the youngest-ever chess grandmaster - breaking the current record of 12 years, 7 months.
