New Bill Seeks To Curb National Emergencies

Seeking to put the brakes on what they see as endless National Emergency declarations, Senators Rand Paul (R–Ky.) and Ron Wyden (D–Ore.) have introduced the Reforming Emergency Powers to Uphold the Balances and Limitations Inherent in the Constitution (REPUBLIC) Act.

The law would allow a President to declare any national emergency they see fit, but require Congress to approve an extension of that declaration after 72 hours.

The bill would also automatically sunset national emergencies after 90 days unless Congress voted again to renew the emergency declaration.
