Suspect Injured in Shooting in Santa Clarita Involving Ex-Sheriff's Deputy

SANTA CLARITA (CNS) - A man who used his pickup truck to plow through the security gate of a community in Santa Clarita was hospitalized in critical condition this morning with injuries he sustained when he was shot by a retired Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy.

Deputies were called about 2:20 p.m. Monday to the gated MacMillan Ranch community at 15900 Warm Springs Drive, near Sand Canyon Road, where the shooting took place, Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

A preliminary investigation determined the driver of a red Toyota Tacoma pickup truck had crashed into a security gate and that the driver used his truck to force his way into the community before stopping in front of a home on Warm Springs Drive.

Moments later, two individuals approached the truck to talk with the driver, who was still sitting in the truck, when the suspect pulled a gun and the retired deputy pulled a gun and a shooting occurred, Koerner said.

The suspect was hit twice in the upper body and taken to a hospital in critical condition, while a handgun, believed to belong to the suspect, was recovered at the scene, Koerner said.

The names of the suspect and the retired deputy were not disclosed.
