Driver Leads CHP On Chase Through Orange County in Van Reported Stolen

ANAHEIM (CNS) - The driver of a stolen van led officers on a meandering chase on Orange County freeways and surface streets this afternoon before surrendering in Garden Grove.

Officers with the Placentia Police Department were conducting surveillance on the older-model white van near South Palm Street and West Palais Road in Anaheim when the suspect took off about 2:15 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

By 3:15 p.m., the suspect was driving southbound on the San Diego (405) Freeway in the Irvine area, where he exited at Culver Boulevard before getting back onto the freeway and driving north before exiting at South Coast Drive in Costa Mesa and driving on surface streets before getting back on the northbound 405 once again.

At different points during the pursuit, a passenger jumped out of the van and a weapon was tossed out of the vehicle, according to broadcast reports.

The chase came to an end near Volkwood Street and Heather Avenue in Garden Grove, where the suspect exited the van without putting it in park. The van slowly side-swiped a parked vehicle before continuing down the street and hitting a garbage can and a fence, where it came to a stop.

The unidentified suspect, who surrendered with his hands up, was taken into custody about 3:40 p.m.
