Unemployment Rate Down Again In LA County, But Still Elevated

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dipped to 16.1% in Los Angeles County in August, down from 17.9% in July, according to figures released today by the state Employment Development Department.

The 16.1% rate was well above the 4.3% rate from the pre-coronavirus era of August 2019.

In Orange County, where seasonally adjusted numbers were not available, the August jobless rate was 9.9%, down from 12.3% in July.

Statewide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 11.4% in August, down from 13.5% in July, but well above the 3.9% rate from August 2019. The comparable estimates for the nation were 8.4% in August, 10.2% in July and 3.7% in August 2019.

According to the EDD, total nonfarm employment in Los Angeles County decreased by 11,500 jobs between July and August to reach nearly 4.1 million. The leisure and hospitality sector led the way in job declines, dropping 11,800 positions.
