Homeowner Opens Fire on Burglary Suspects in Pico Rivera

PICO RIVERA (CNS) - Two men who allegedly tried to burglarize a home in Pico Rivera this morning were shot, one fatally, by the homeowner.

The shooting occurred about 1:20 a.m. in the 8400 block of Serapis Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

“The suspects were confronted by the resident of the location, who was armed with a handgun,'' a sheriff's statement said. “The resident fired at one of the suspects after he broke a window and began to make entry, (and) that suspect fled the location on foot.

“The victim walked outside onto his patio, where he confronted the second suspect,'' the statement said. “The suspect made furtive movements towards his waistband when he was shot by the resident.''

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

“The first suspect was driven to a hospital by a female ... getaway driver,'' the statement said. “She was arrested at the hospital. The first suspect remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the torso.''

The names of the woman and the hospitalized man were not immediately released, nor was the name of the resident who fired the shots. The investigation was continuing.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
