FCC Approves "988" as Number for Suicide Hotline

The Federal Communications Commission has approved 988 as the country's new number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

The FCC says all phone service providers will have to direct all calls to the new line by July 16, 2022 though the original number (1-800-273-TALK) will remain active before and after the switch.

In its press release, the commission says:

"Establishing the easy-to-remember 988 as the "911" for suicide prevention and mental health services will make it easier for Americans in crisis to access the help they need and decrease the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health issues."
