LOS ANGELES (CNS) - In a year that has seen the entertainment industry thrown into turmoil by the coronavirus pandemic, Jimmy Kimmel was announced today as the host of the upcoming 72nd Emmy Awards.
“I don't know where or how or even why we are doing this, but we are and I am hosting it!'' Kimmel proclaimed on his Twitter page, confirming his selection to lead the Sept. 20 ceremony.
The announcement comes a week after the Television Academy canceled the annual Creative Arts Emmy Award ceremony, during which the bulk of the awards are presented, except for the top acting and program honors, which are handed out during the main televised event.
The academy announced the Creative Arts ceremony will be held virtually over several nights. It also canceled the traditional Governors Ball events for both the Creative Arts Emmys and the main Emmy ceremony, due to concerns over COVID-19.
On Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced it was delaying next year's Oscar telecast by two months due to concerns about the virus.
But the Television Academy is moving forward with plans for the 72nd Emmy Award, although questions remain about the format and precautions that will need to be taken to keep nominees, guests and crew safe.
Kimmel has hosted the Emmy Awards twice before, and he's a two-time veteran Oscar host.
“We know Jimmy Kimmel will deliver a uniquely entertaining, funny and moving Primetime Emmys show,'' ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke said in a statement. “ ... Just as Jimmy has done with his own show over the past few months, he will tackle this momentous event with heart and humor, and bring some much-needed joy and optimism to our television colleagues and viewers at home.''
Emmy nominations will be announced July 28.
