Shaquille O'Neal is paying funeral expenses for the family of a slain high school football standout.

Dexter Rentz had signed to play college ball at Louisville but was shot and killed last weekend in Orlando.

O’Neal, who has maintained a residence in Orlando long after leaving the Magic, told ESPN’s Andrea Adelson he spoke with Rentz’s parents and will pay for all funeral expenses, including a horse and carriage and custom-made casket.

"Whatever his mom wants," O'Neal told ESPN Monday. "He was on his way, he really was."

"I don't know what it feels like to lose a son, but I know what it feels like to lose someone," Shaq continued. "This one hurts my heart. It really does. I with things like this would never go on. It's just so sad, and I want to be able to help his family. I wanted to take care of it."

In times like this, acts like go the distance.

The family is appreciative beyond words of Shaq's help.
