How to Date While Quarantined

Young loving couple wearing face masks

This seems like a headline out of a science-fiction film starring Will Smith battling artificial intelligent robots aiming to take over the world. Unfortunately it’s just 2020. We are three months into the year and already have taken a lot of L’s. We’ve discovered that the World Series was a scam, Kobe Bryant and his beautiful daughter Gianna passed away, Australia nearly burnt down, and now there is a worldwide pandemic due to a viral respiratory infection known as the infamous Coronavirus. Amidst all of this, we are still individuals looking for love. Even in the darkest days love shall be found. Dating in this new, but temporary, world can be challenging. Once the California government shut down access to local bars, clubs, restaurants, and more in an effort to contain the spread of the virus, dating life immediately went into shock. The president also urged that people in the country not attend gatherings of more than 10 people. So what if you and your partner are not at the Netflix and chill stage? How do you get to know somebody when you should be practicing social distancing? If you’ve recently started dating someone, you may be feeling the stress of trying to maintain that relationship. Once common social norms are now shut down, calling for a flurry of creativity to build strong connections. While it’s best to remain indoors, isolated from others, we understand that a little fresh air is needed. Check out these fun ways to date while quarantined.

Netflix Movie Party

Netflix apparently has the option for those in long distance situations to still enjoy a movie together. Introducing, "Netflix Party," a browser extension, you can simultaneously binge-watch Netflix shows and movies with your friends while still practicing social distancing. The add-on has existed for some time, however has recently gotten a few more updates. Schedule a movie date and video chat while watching.

Skype / Facetime Date

Although many if us videochat on a daily, now more than ever we'll be utilizing this function. Even if your partner lives nearby, social distancing is real and should be practiced as much as possible. Swap those casual lunches and shopping trips for a Facetime session. Let's keep some boundaries though and not go to the bathroom while on the phone with your partner. Call them back after.

Dine and Dash

Not in the way you think. Due to Los Angeles county shutting down the restaurant dine-in option, we're getting crafty with the word play. Meals are still allowed to be picked up as to-go orders until the virus is contained. You may wonder if this option is safe considering there is still a social exchange. Fret not, hanging food from one person to the other can be safe if precaution is taken. Make sure to wash your hands and/or sanitize before and after making contact with another person.

“The handoff is five seconds, you go inside and wash your hands. Or just have them leave it at your doorstep," says says LaMar Hasbrouck, a public health physician and past medical epidemiologist with the CDC.

If you're still feeling worried in anyway, Instacart recently introduced a new feature to their app, “Leave at My Door Delivery.” The option was originally created to deliver food for customers who were not home at the time, but with recent events, the option has certainly come in handy.

Paint and Sip

Paint and sip parties have become increasingly popular as of late. People are loving the idea of getting their creative juices flowing while hanging with friends. You can easily do this with your partner. Postmates some supplies if you're short.

Full-blown Sleepover

No, we're not talking about a Netflix & Chill situation....unless you want. Remember when you were in the second grade and itching for the next sleepover party? Recreate that! Grab your favorite games, snacks, face masks, movies, sleeping bags and get the party started. Make your own fort in the living room out of bedsheets for extra fun. Please remember to do laundry after. We're not in second grade anymore, y'all.

Create New Food Combination

No doubt you've stocked up on an assortment of non-perishables. What are you going to do, eat a can of beans? Alone? No thanks! While grocery stores aren't running out of food anytime soon, the lines are crazy long. So for a date night, how about whipping up your own specialties? While you're at it, go all out and make it an "official" restaurant experience. Dining table, candles, glass of wine and a 4-course meal. Get fancy with it, what else have you got to do?

Outside Dates

If you must go outside, practice caution and please wash your hands!

“Covid-19 is not airborne,” Kate Vergara, a public health and infectious disease specialist says. “It is transmitted through droplets — being coughed on, or touching something that someone coughed on, for example, and then touching your face and allowing that pathogen to get into your system through your eyes, nose, or mouth.”

Drive-in Movie Theaters

Traditional movie theaters have also closed up shop for the time being. However, a great date experience can be sitting in a car and watching a film together. Paramount Drive-in plays great current films on two different screens. Check them out!

Go for a Walk / Hike

Hit the open air. Choose areas that are less populated. The more ventilated an area, the lower the risk of transmission.

A Scenic Drive

A nice drive down PCH is always worth it. Load up a great playlist, packed snacks and hit the road. This is a great time to talk with one another and the best part is - no LA traffic!

Rooftop Picnic

This is a cute idea, quarantined or not. Many in Los Angeles live in building with rooftop hangout zones. This is the perfect place to get a breeze of the outside world, while still secluded. If you don't have a rooftop, then enjoy the backyard area.

The CDC and the WHO recommend several basic measures to help prevent the spread of Covid-19:

  • Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds (40 seconds is best).
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Contact a health worker if you have symptoms; fever and a dry cough are most common.
  • DON’T touch your face.
  • DON’T travel if you have a fever and cough.
  • DON’T wear a face mask if you are well.
