'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' Wins Best Picture at Critics Choice Awards

Niche Import Co. At The 25th Annual Critics' Choice Awards

SANTA MONICA (CNS) - Quentin Tarantino's “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” won for best picture at tonight's 25th annual Critics Choice Awards, a week after it won for best motion picture, comedy or musical at the Golden Globe Awards.

Both the best actor and best actress film winners also won at last Sunday's Golden Globes.

Joaquin Phoenix won for best actor, honored for his chilling portrayal of the lead villain in “Joker.” Renee Zellweger won for best actress for her portrayal of Judy Garland in “Judy.”

Netflix's “The Irishman” led the field with 14 nominations, but only won for best acting ensemble. Martin Scorsese's mob drama was winless at the Golden Globes when it received five nominations, second to “Marriage Story's” six.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” topped the field with four awards, also winning for best original screenplay (Tarantino), best supporting actor (Brad Pitt) and best production design (Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh).

There was a tie for best director between Sam Mendes for the World War I thriller “1917,” the Golden Globes winner, and Bong Joon Ho of “Parasite,” the South Korean black comedy-thriller that also won the Critics Choice Award for best foreign film, repeating its Golden Globes victory.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” bested the Golden Globes best motion picture, drama winner “1917”; “The Irishman”; “Ford v Ferrari”; “Jojo Rabbit”; “Joker”; “Little Women”; “Marriage Story”; “Parasite”; and “Uncut Gems” for best picture, a week after winning the Golden Globe for best motion picture, comedy or musical.

Since it was first awarded in 1995, the Critics Choice best picture winner has gone on to win the best picture Oscar 14 times.

The other multiple winners in the movie categories were “1917,” which won for best cinematography (Roger Deakins) and best editing (Lee Smith) in addition to Mendes' best director victory; “Parasite,” for best foreign film and Bong's best director victory; “Dolemite Is My Name” for best comedy and best costume design (Ruth E. Carter); “Joker” for best score (Hildur Guonadottir) and best actor (Phoenix); and “Avengers: Endgame,” for the best visual effects and best action movie.

Amazon's “Fleabag” was the top television winner with three awards --

best comedy, best actress in a comedy series for Phoebe Waller-Bridge for her portrayal of the title character in the series she created, an angry, confused, sexually voracious young woman living in London, and Andrew Scott as a priest, with whom Fleabag falls in love.

The other multiple television winners were HBO's “Succession” for best drama series and best actor in a drama series (Jeremy Strong); Netflix's “When They See Us” for best limited series and best actor in a limited series or movie made for television (Jharrel Jerome); and HBO's “Watchmen” for best actress in a drama series (Regina King) and best supporting actress in a drama series (Jean Smart).

Netflix led all networks and streaming services with nine awards. HBO won six and Amazon four.

The awards were presented in a ceremony at the Barker Hangar, hosted by Taye Diggs.

During the ceremony, Eddie Murphy received a Lifetime Achievement Award, while Kristen Bell received the fourth annual #SeeHer Award, which honors women who work to change stereotypes and “acknowledge the importance of authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape.”

The awards are voted on by the Critics Choice Association, which bills itself as the largest critics organization in the United States and Canada, representing more than 400 television, radio and online critics.

The association was organized last year with the formal merger of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, recognizing the blurring of the distinctions between film, television and streaming content.
