Katy Perry Only Has Time For 'Small Talk' On New Post-Breakup Bop: Listen

Katy Perry's latest single is all about those awkward encounters with your ex.

This Friday (August 9) sees the official release of Perry's newest song, "Small Talk," the most recent effort from her upcoming album. The record, produced by pop darling Charlie Puth and Johan Carlsson, finds the songstress reminiscing on all the intimate moments she shared with a former lover and how tersely things become after the pair break up.

"Isn't it strange that you used to know me?/ All the highs and lows and in-betweens/ And now you see me and just say, 'Hey,'" Perry sings in the opening verse in this sweet-like-bubblegum ditty, before awkwardly asking, "Isn't it weird that you've seen me naked?/ We had conversations 'bout forever/ Now it's 'bout the weather‚ okay."

With an equally infectious, at times playful chorus, Perry makes peace with this weird circumstance. "We were lovers/ And now there's nothing left but small talk," she sings, before toning things down with fun "Blah-blah-blah" post-chorus ad-lips.

"Small Talk" is the second solo single we've received from the pop star after her first, "Never Really Over," debuted in June and ascended to No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. She first teased the lyrics to the track on Instagram earlier this week, leading some to speculate it was about ex-boyfriend John Mayer.

Earlier this year, Perry also linked up with Zedd for the futuristic pop jam "365" in March. All three singles are expected to appear on the songbird's forthcoming fifth studio album, which has yet to be announced.
