10 Killed in Small Plane Accident at Dallas-Area Airport

A small, twin-engine plane that crashed into a vacant hangar at a Dallas-area airport on Sunday, killed ten people, authorities said Monday.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the accident at the Addison Municipal Airport destroyed the Beechcraft BE-250 King Air just after 9 a.m. local time. There were no survivors, according to Addison city spokeswoman Mary Rosenbleeth.

The plane was bound for St. Petersburg, Florida, had just lifted off the runway when the aircraft suddenly veered to the left, dropping its left wing and crashing into the vacant hangar, Addison fire spokesman Edward Martelle said. The resulting fire was quickly extinguished, Martelle added.

One witness told KDFW-TV the plane looked like it was having trouble while taking off.

"It looked like it was clearly reduced power. I didn’t know if it was on purpose or not, but then, when the plane started to veer to the left, and you could tell it couldn’t climb. My friend and I looked at each other and we’re like, ‘Oh my God. They’re going to crash,’” David Snell said.

The FAA says investigators were at the crash site on Sunday and the National Transportation Safety Board also said it was sending people to the scene to determine what happened. Officials say they don't know the cause of the crash, but a preliminary report is expected in two weeks.
