Police Arrest Man Who Allegedly Discussed Bombing Times Square

Federal authorities have arrested a New York City man who allegedly discussed plans to purchase grenades and use them in an attack on Times Square. 22-year-old Ashiqul Alam was detained as he tried to buy illegal guns with the serial numbers removed.

Authorities say that Alam was not part of a more extensive network and was acting as a lone wolf. He had been under surveillance by the New York FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force for quite some time and had discussed various plans for his attack.

He initially spoke about using a suicide vest along with grenades and other explosives, before settling on a plan to shoot up the popular tourist area in the heart of New York City. He also discussed plans to assassinate politicians in New York and Washington D.C.

Alam is a legal permanent resident, has a green card, and lives with his parents in Queens.

Officials say Alam will face weapons-related charges and that they do not expect to file terrorism charges against him.
