Hydrogen Peroxide Spill Shut Down NB Lanes on 5 Freeway in Castaic

CASTAIC (CNS) - All the lanes were reopened on the Golden State (5) Freeway after they were closed earlier today when a tanker began spilling its load of hydrogen peroxide near Castaic.

The spill forced the California Highway Patrol to close down all northbound lanes at the site, shutting down traffic flow for miles.

The incident happened about 2:25 p.m. between Parker Road and Templin Highway near Castaic, backing up traffic to Hasley Canyon Road, according to the CHP.

The CHP also closed down the Lake Hughes onramp to the northbound 5 Freeway. A SigAlert was declared by the CHP just after 3 p.m.

The truck was estimated to be carrying between 4,200 and 4,500 gallons of hydrogen peroxide. No storm drains were affected by the spill, authorities said.

The CHP reopened two lanes around 5 p.m. and the remaining lanes at about 6:10 p.m., when they canceled the SigAlert.
