San Clemente Mayor, Steven Swartz, Suddenly Dead At Age 74

What a twist of events.

San Clemente's Mayor, Steven Swartz, who was in the middle of his first term on the City Council has suddenly died today. He was 74.

City officials confirmed that the longtime city resident died Wednesday morning, while on vacation in Palm Springs with his wife.

Swartz has been apart of San Clemente's City Council for over two years and was appointed mayor in December.

“Everyone is in shock,” said Mayor Pro Tem Dan Bane, who said he was contacted earlier Wednesday by Swartz’s wife, Nikki. “Steve was a community leader for many years. He loved San Clemente and chose to give his time to the community. The community owes him a lot.”

Swartz had a successful bond construction business in town and served on the city's Beaches, Parks and Rec committee for more than a decade. He also served in the U.S Army during the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife and son.
