Jeff Bezos Keeping 75 Percent of Amazon Stock in Divorce Settlement

Jeff Bezos, in divorce settlement, retains 75 percent of the Amazon stock he held with his now ex-wife MacKenzie

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his ex-wife MacKenzie Bezos announced Thursday they had reached a settlement dissolving their marriage that leaves Jeff with 75 percent of their Amazon shares and all their joint holdings in The Washington Post, and space-exploration company, Blue Origin.

Mackenzie Bezos, an author, first tweeted the about news of the settlement from her Twitter account.

"Grateful to have finished the process of dissolving my marriage with Jeff with support from each other and everyone who reached out to us in kindness, and looking forward to next phase as co-parents and friends," MacKenzie wrote on Twitter. "Happy to be giving him all my interests in the Washington Post and Blue Origin, and 75 percent of our Amazon stock plus voting control of my shares to support his continued contributions with the teams of these incredible companies."

"Excited about my own plans. Grateful for the past as I look forward to what comes next," MacKenzie added.

The message was later retweeted by Jeff Bezos.

Jeff and Mackenzie Bezos were married for 25 years and had four children together. According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, MacKenzie will retain enough shares to represent 4 percent of Amazon's outstanding common stock, making her the third-largest shareholder at the company. The settlement means Jeff Bezos will retain control over Amazon, the company he founded in 1994.

In a separate statement, Jeff Bezos wrote that he too, was "grateful for her support and for her kindness" during the settlement process.

"I'm so grateful to all my friends and family for reaching out with encouragement and love. It means more than you know. MacKenzie most of all. I'm grateful for her support and for her kindness in this process and am very much looking forward to our new relationship as friends and co-parents."

"In all our work together, MacKenzie's abilities have been on full display. She has been an extraordinary partner, ally, and mother. She is resourceful and brilliant and loving, and as our futures unroll, I know I'll always be learning from her."

Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos announced their split back in January after a story emerged in the National Enquirer that revealed a relationship with TV personality Lauren Sanchez. Bezos' longtime security consultant recently said that an investigation revealed that the Saudi Arabian government was behind the hack that obtained illicit photos and text messages from Bezos' phone.
