House Passes First Gun Control Bill In Years

The House of Representatives passed a gun control law that will require every gun seller to conduct a background check on all gun sales. Under the current law, only federally licensed dealers are required to conduct an FBI background check before a gun sale, allowing private sellers to skip the process.

Democrats claimed that this was a loophole in the law because it allowed someone who was not legally allowed to purchase a gun to buy one from a private seller online or at a gun show.

The "Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019" passed the House with a vote of 240 to 190. Five Republicans co-sponsored the bill and eight members of the GOP crossed party lines to vote in favor of the legislation.

The bill now heads to the Senate where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will decide whether to bring the legislation up for a vote. Even if the Senate holds a votes on the bill, it is unlikely to pass the Republican-controlled chamber.
