Two Aircraft Hit by Lightning: One Returns to LAX, Other Diverts To Oakland

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Lightning struck a JetBlue airliner shortly after takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport today, but no injuries were reported and the pilot turned around and made a safe landing.

The lightning strike occurred about 10:45 a.m. and involved Flight 324, which was en route to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, according to LAX and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The plane landed safely about 11:30 a.m., an LAX official said. It will undergo a safety inspection.

A second plane -- a Southwest flight from LAX to Portland -- safely diverted to Oakland after it too was struck by lightning, according to ABC7.
