Guatemalan Girl's Father Mourns After Her Death With Border Patrol

The father of an immigrant child from Guatemala who died in U.S. Border Patrol custody is mourning her death.   This weekend, the director of El Paso migrant shelter Annunciation House, Rubén García, read a statement from the lawyers who now represent Nery Gilberto Caal, the father of seven-year-old girl Jakelín Caal Maquín.  Mr. Caal was provided with shelter from Annunciation House following the death of his daughter.  Garcia says Jakelín's father wants the public to know that she was being fed and was well hydrated throughout their trek to the U.S.   In the statement, the lawyers noted Mr. Caal says he is grateful for the efforts by Border Patrol personnel to save his daughter's life.  An official cause of death hasn't been released yet pending the results of an autopsy.  Jakelín's body will be transferred back to her native Guatemala.
