L.A. County Jobless Rate Holds Steady in October

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County held steady at 4.6 percent in October, the same rate as September, the state Employment Development Department reported today.

The October unemployment rate was slightly above the rate in the same month a year ago, when it was also 4.5 percent.

In Orange County, where seasonally adjusted numbers were not available, the October unemployment rate was 2.9 percent, up slightly from 2.8 percent in September.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for California was 4.1 percent in October, the same rate as September but below the 4.5 percent rate from October 2017. The comparable estimates for the nation were 3.7 percent in October, 3.7 percent in September and 4.1 percent in October 2017.

According to the EDD, total nonfarm employment increased in Los Angeles County by about 43,800 jobs between September and October to reach more than 4.5 million. The government sector showed the largest gain, adding 11,700 jobs.

About 240,000 people were unemployed in October in Los Angeles County, which has a work force of more than 5.1 million.
