MORENO VALLEY (CNS) - Officials from the Val Verde Unified School District are cheering confirmation that the Rancho Verde High School Crimson Regiment will be playing in the 2020 Tournament of Roses Parade -- a first-time parade appearance by any school from the district.
``This is the most prestigious honor a marching band program can receive,'' band director Honglac Hathuc said.
``It is surreal and just a dream. We are so excited to represent Rancho Verde High, Val Verde Unified and the communities of Perris and Moreno Valley on New Year's Day 2020.''
According to VVUSD officials, the Moreno Valley school's application was among numerous submissions from marching bands worldwide sent to the Tournament of Roses Committee for consideration earlier this year. The committee makes selections well in advance. The Val Verde Unified group's selection was formally confirmed by Tournament of Roses Parade President Laura Farber at the end of last month.
``What an honor this is to be selected to perform at the 2020 Rose Parade,'' VVUSD Superintendent Michael McCormick said. ``The students' reaction to the announcement was wonderful and unbelievable. I am so proud of our students, and I am positive that they will represent Val Verde with pride and honor in Pasadena.''The parade, which began in 1890, involves bands, equestrian units and floats making a 5.5-mile trip down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena. The city of Riverside's Mission Inn float was part of the 2018 Rose Parade. It was the first time since 1959 that the city had participated in the celebrated event.
Val Verde Unified operates 22 campuses, drawing students from north Perris and south Moreno Valley, as well as the area surrounding March Air Reserve Base.
