LAPD Releases Video of Fatal August Officer-Involved Shooting

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Los Angeles Police Department released video today of an officer-involved shooting that occurred in August in South Los Angeles that wounded an FBI agent and left the suspect dead.

Daniel Valdez, 70, of the Riverside County community of Perris, died at the scene of the shooting, which occurred about 11 a.m. Aug. 7 in the parking lot of a motel near 41st Street and Central Avenue.

LAPD officers and an FBI agent assigned to a gang and drug task force had gone to the Central Inn Motel while investigating a July 31 fatal shooting when they came upon the suspect, who was armed, said LAPD Detective Meghan Aguilar.

The shooting that ensued left one FBI agent with a gunshot wound on his left wrist. The weapon, a .38-caliber revolver, was recovered in the parking lot, ABC7 reported.

“In that officer-involved shooting, the FBI agent was struck by gunfire, and he was transported to a local hospital” for treatment of non-life- threatening injuries, Aguilar said.

Valdez had been sought for shooting two family members at about 3:50 p.m. July 31 near 41st Place and Long Beach Avenue, according to police. Jason Ruelas, 43, died at the scene, and a man in his 50s was hospitalized. The victims were Valdez's cousins, with whom he was in a dispute over real estate, according to CBS2.

The investigation is still ongoing.

"After the investigation is completed, the chief of police will forward his findings to the civilian Board of Police Commissioners, who will evaluate the evidence to determine whether the officers' tactics and use of force met the high standards expected of all LAPD officers," LAPD spokesman Josh Rubenstein said in the video released.
