GLENDALE (CNS) - A supermarket shoplifting suspect was at large this afternoon after leading Glendale police on a brief chase, in which he rammed patrol cars with a new-model Mustang before fleeing on foot into a neighborhood near the La Crescenta border, triggering a massive search that was eventually called off.

Officers were called at 10:01 a.m. to the Vons store at 561 N. Glendale Ave., where the unidentified suspect had taken some liquor, but he had already left, said Tahnee Lightfoot of the Glendale Police Department.

Officers spotted the suspect's car nearby on Foothill Boulevard and boxed it in, but he refused to surrender and instead rammed the patrol vehicles to make his getaway. He abandoned the white Mustang a few blocks away and fled on foot.

A perimeter was set up, but police on the ground and in the air were unable to locate the suspect and called off the search about 1:50 p.m. A sergeant at the scene said it was unclear whether the suspect was armed, but no weapon was seen.

Glendale police asked anyone with any information regarding the suspect to call them at (818) 548-4911.
